Top 10 Games – Part 2

Qwirkle

Qwirkle No. 1

Qwirkle was recommended to us by some friends.  Once we started playing, we were hooked.  It is simple, but strategic at the same time.  Both older and younger children really love it.  In fact, the younger children were beating us parents from the start–must be something in their uncluttered minds.

It is downright fun!  The only drawback is waiting for your turn. Everyone is very eager to make their move before the Qwirkle is taken by another player.  There was a time where we played it every night after dinner.

Here are some specifics about the game.

Skills they learn:  patience!, abstract thinking, strategic thinking

Object of game:  Strategically create and expand lines of color and shape in order to score most points.  Placing six shapes or colors in a row gets a Qwrikle, which is more points.

Players:  2 – 4

Ages:  6 and up (but I bet even your younger kids could play and learn from the shape matching aspect)

Designer:  Susan McKinley Ross

Publisher:  MindWare

Noteworthy comments:  2011 winner of the Spiel des Jahres prestigious game award.  It’s MindWare’s best-selling game of all time.

Part 3 of this post series will give specifics on Zooloretto, our current No. 2 game.

Top 10 Family Games – Part 1

Kids playing Qwirkle

Winter is a good time to recharge and prepare for the coming outdoor projects and growing season. It is also a great time to enjoy the family indoors and spend time together playing games. We love to play games as a family after a day of work and schooling. It’s a great way to get the family together and really have some fun.

But, what do games have to do with country living, you may ask? Games are a great tool for developing the soft skills needed to be successful in any activity. These soft skills are very helpful in preparing our children to manage various aspects of our country life enterprises.

The games we love are the ones that build thinking and life skills while having fun.  Put aside those mind-numbing video games. They just destroy brain cells (or as our favorite detective Hercule Poirot would say…”the little gray cells”) and separate the family. Focus on games that develop maturity and togetherness.

There are many games out there that support this goal. The next couple of posts will describe a few of our favorite games. They are fun for the whole family and teach our children the thinking and other skills we’re after.

Enough with the serious stuff and “big picture,” here is our current Top 10 game list. Some are old time favorites and some you may not have come across before.  I bet your family will love them just as much as we do.

New Year, New Possibilities

With the New Year upon us, many of us think about new possibilities and goals for improving our homestead and making things better.  Especially as the new seed catalogs start coming in, I personally like to think about new things to add to the homestead and what new experiments I can try.  That’s what I am doing again this year.

Resolution #1:  Read new books, but make sure to try at least one new idea!

I love books.  People that know me either love to hear about the new books I’m reading or cringe when I start telling them about all the new ideas they should try.   Reading is great, but it only really matters if you learn new things that make things better.  I have been in situations where much reading is done, but not much really changes.  What’s the use?  So, resolution one for this New Year—read more—but make sure to try at least one new experiment to improve the homestead.

As examples, in 2010 I researched rock dust to remineralize the soil and experimented with Azomite.  It’s some really good stuff, but a little expensive.  In 2011, I read all about and began using the Grow Biointensive system and John Jeavons’ instructions in How to Grow More Vegetables Than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land Than You Can Imagine.  This past year, I began experimenting with Tillage Radish to improve the soil and reduce the work of cultivating our hard Missouri clay.

Resolution #2:  Focus on one important goal.

I love to try new things, as Laura can attest to.  Sometimes I lose my focus and drive my family crazy trying to do too many new things.  Resolution two—focus on doing one new thing well.  You cannot do everything and especially not everything well.  Continually challenge the things you are doing and make sure you stay focused on the important things.  Master a new skill or new improvement, and then move on.

Resolution #3:  If you keep doing the same thing, you will get the same results.

Lastly, as a homesteader and mini-farmer, I thrive on improvement and growth.  I’m excited to see what new people I will meet, what new books I will discover and what new things I can try—as long as I remain focused.  The soil can always be made better.  We’ve got a long way to go.  Resolution three—If you keep doing the same thing, you will get the same results—so this is the year to go for it!  We all get busy with our day to day activities but identify one thing to do different.  It could be big or small, but pushing on innovation is what will make your homestead or mini-farm better and is truly a new year with new possibilities. This year, I’m focusing on significant soil improvement.

What are some of your New Year’s resolutions?

Tillage Radish Cover Crop Update Five

Tillage Radish bed 12-29-12

Here’s update number five in my Tillage Radish cover crop experiment.  Winter is in full swing at the end of December.  The radish foliage has pretty much died completely and the tubers are starting to rot although the bigger ones are frozen right now.

Tillage Radish small bed 12-29-12

In the smaller bed, the chickens have enjoyed eating some of the above ground tubers while fertilizing the soil and working in the dead foliage in true permaculture style.  It’s hard to believe that just a little over a month ago in update number four the radishes were still growing with lush, green foliage.

Here are the past updates:

Update Four (11/27/12)

Update Three (10/5/12)

Update Two (9/5/12)

Update One (8/10/12)

Buckeyes

This holiday season my friends and I had a baking day at my house to bake Christmas goodies for our choir directors.  One of my good friends showed me how to make delicious Buckeyes. They are so extremely easy and fun to make that I had to share it with y’all!

Here is the recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups peanut butter
  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 bags semi sweet chocolate chips

Directions:

1.  Cover a big cookie sheet with wax paper and set aside. Put chocolate chips in crock-pot and melt on low. Add a little oil if too thick.

2.  Mix the rest of the ingredients with your hands or a spoon in a large bowl.

4.  Dip balls in the melted chocolate with a fork. Leave a little circle on top to make the buckeye look. Smooth over fork hole with your fingers.

5.  Freeze again.

They are ready to eat!!! You need to store them in the freezer because they melt very fast. My mom just loves them. Enjoy!
